12 month old - barking?

My son, 12 months old, has a cough that sounds like a bark. It tends to be worse at night although he has been having coughing fits during daytime. No congestion but, his nose is draining clear. We have both the hot and cold humidi (not sure the best choice so do both) going at night. He is a pacifier baby and it seems to help. Any recommendations??
