What is the best fuel to use in a forge; coal, charcoal, or propane?

I'm planning on building a forge. Which would be best for swordsmithing, and how long would it take to drain a 25 gallon propane tank, if it is best. Round figures are fine, nothing too exact is necessary. Thanks in advance.
